DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SURGERY

 

INTRODUCTION

The department of General Surgery is one of the major pillars in the functioning of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS). It was started in the year 2006, in the HIMS Old Hospital – Sri Chamrajendra Hospital and was shifted to the HIMS New Hospital building in the year 2014, with 8 surgical wards, with a bed capacity of 155+, a fully equipped surgical intensive care unit, 5 operating theatres, 2 laparoscopic theatres and 1 urology theatre.

Department of Surgery at HIMS Hassan, is a tertiary care providing Department, catering to patients with simple pain abdomen to complicated cases requiring major surgery and ICU care. We see around 250+ patients per day in outpatient department from 9 am - 4 pm and attend to emergencies round the clock.

Specialty clinics are also part of outpatient care. We have a plastic surgeon, and 3 full time Urologists managing all types of urologic cases such as endourology, reconstructive urology and laparoscopic urology. 

All the unit chiefs, have more than 20 years of experience, in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate, along with a vast experience in managing all kinds of surgical emergencies and elective surgical procedures. 

We, the department of general surgery successfully hosted KSC-ASICON in 2018. The department imparts education to both undergraduate medical (MBBS) and postgraduate (MS, General Surgery) students with the vision of making better surgeons to serve the society. Our department has succeeded in securing 5 postgraduate seats in 2020.

We undertake the health schemes, hold the first position in state to treat patients under ABARK Scheme.

  • Laparoscopic surgeries
  • Undertake 4000+ Major surgeries and 6000+ Minor surgeries per

EDUCATION

Under graduate MBBS teaching programme: -

  1. Bedside history taking and clinical examination from 2nd year onwards
  2. Regular Theory classes, to establish thorough knowledge of the subject
  3. Vast exposure to observe operative procedures in the OT
  4. Regular internal assessment and end posting evaluation to assess and improve the knowledge of the student

 

Post graduate residency programme: -

 

  1. Entry – All India competitive examination
  2. Rotation in all surgical specialities
  3. Examination at the end of 3 years
  4. Regular training programme includes weekly seminars, journal presentations and clinical presentation.
  5. Extensive hands-on surgical skills training at skill lab in the surgery
  6. Vast exposure to elective and emergency surgical
  7. Residents get good opportunity to observe and perform elective and emergency surgeries, including minimal access surgery – Laparoscopic procedures.
